College of Bali

I am taking two workshops this summer when I get back to the states. A watercolor course with Charles Reid in Vermont and "drawing bootcamp" with Dalvero Academy in Orlando, Florida. I am hoping that the two will compliment one another and help me on my creative journey. Both will require me to paint and draw people and I need the practice in addition to sketching at the beach (soooooooo hot).

I have started rereading the Charles Reid's books I managed to cram into my luggage and doing daily (well, almost) 30-60 second poses for as long as I can stand it on posemaniacs.com. I then practice my Indonesian for our "Super Express Indonesian" lessons with Pak Usman. Today, I took a break for a Bali Kopi and I couldn't help thinking that I felt like I was back in college. The only difference is I think I smoked a cigarette with my coffee in that galaxy far far away, so long long ago.

The above sketch was three 60 second poses on Indonesian paper that is used to serve street food. It is cheap so I can burn through it and not care. I colored in later with gouache.

It is awesome that you are getting to travel. Sounds like a wonderful experience. You sound very excited about your upcoming classes:) The 60 sec people are really nice, they have a lot of movement and I like the effects of adding the gouache.

Your people are so interesting in their poses and certainly lively--the color used is also exciting---I recall Charles Reid (must've been early in his career) correcting one of my lessons sent in for the Art Instrction Inc. correspondance course I took as a child in Maine. This was the course you could "qualify" for if you did a Draw Me (mine was a woman in profile with a hat) drawing well enough--it always stuck with me that his helpful critique pointed out that I could use help in the "value" department--he was right, too. How I'd love to just sit in on his classses now!

Oh my goodness, how wonderful to take a class with Reid! I first heard about him when I was trying to do some watercolor work with portraits about a year ago. His book was very helpful.

Wow! Even your 60 second pose sketches are wonderful! I love the color that you added to these, it really makes them come to life! Great job!

Oh, I'm so jealous--you're going to study with Charles Reid. I love his work--I have several of his videos and could watch him for hours. And the drawing course, too--good for you! Your work is already so enjoyable, I can't wait to see what comes of all your efforts. This is wonderful--I think the posemaniacs site is hard but a great exercise.

Wonderful drawings as always. I love Reid... and can't imagine a drawing class being un-helpful! And Thanks for surfacing "posemaniacs." I couldn't remember the url and also wanted to practice.

I love how you've arranged the figures on the page--it's like a dance. I've gone to pose maniacs but never attempted anything!
I too have all the Charles Reid books and try to read them now and then--I need to take his advice on how to press the brush to the paper ...
But a drawing bootcamp!! That's what I need--but I go straight to color: instant gratification.
